The non-profit program, begun in 1998, is a week long stay on the campus of one of 5 colleges and universities in California.
Campers attend a daily core class, taught by credentialed teachers, have hands on lab experiences, take field trips, and interact with women engaged professionally in these fields.
The girls are selected from a rotating list of middle schools in Fullerton and Buena Park. Recommended by their science teachers, the students must complete an application, write an essay, and be interviewed by AAUW members. Final selection of the number of girls who will attend Tech Trek is dependent on the amount of monies available from contributors. All contributions are tax deductible.
The goal of Tech Trek is to counter the discouragement girls often encounter in considering a math/science career and to offer different possibilities to girls who might not have considered going to college.
Tech Trek is a summer camp, for about-to-be 8th grade girls, designed to develop interests and excitement in math, science or technology before they enter high school and narrow their options of choosing a career.
AAUW members and friends may contribute to funding for Tech Trek simply by purchasing at Albertson's/Sav-On and Ralphs.
- Just sign up (Click on the Tech Trek button at the top of this page to email the Tech Trek Chair)
- Swipe your Albertsons/Sav-On Preferred Card or Ralphs Club Card every time you shop for groceries or drug items
- A portion of the spending will go directly to AAUW Fullerton for Tech Trek
Grants from community companies also contribute funding for this educational experience. Beckman Coulter and Pell grants were received this year. Additional grants have been pursued allowing us to send ten (10) girls (of the 18 interviewed) from Washington and Imperial Middle Schools in the La Habra District Schools this year to the Tech Trek Camp at Whittier College.
