AAUW is a leader on Issue Advocacy - lending it’s name to an issue and speaking on Capital Hill. AAUW keeps members posted on all the latest issues related to equality and awareness of the current status of important issues. Through AAUW Action network members are kept informed by way of “2-Minute Activist”, Action Alert monthly newsletter, Grassroots Tools and Issues Pages.
Through the national website members can become aware of congressional voting records, Supreme Court nominees, affirmative action, Patriot Act, updates on Medicare Reform and Social Security Issues. Washington Update, a weekly bulletin for public policy chairs, provides regular updates on the Washington scene.
Members are kept current on all activity in Washington that relates to our areas of interest and are encouraged to communicate with our senators and representatives to help influence a vote. We have up to date information on the congressional voting records and the current schedule of bills facing both houses. With this information AAUW is aware of issues that we care about and the AAUW Capitol Hill Lobby Corps is ready to go.
Once a week, volunteer members and college student interns give AAUW a voice and a face on Capitol Hill. Since its formation in 1972 the Lobby Corps has made tens of thousands of visits to congressional offices, making AAUW a familiar and respected name among members of Congress and their staffs. Because of this corps, working hand in hand with lobbying staff, AAUW has had a significant political impact on legislation concerning issues such as:
Education
Civil rights
Reproductive rights
Health care.
AAUW is constantly promoting equity concerns and others mentioned above. We do make a difference.
Since 1881 the American Association of University Women has been the nation’s leading voice promoting education and equity for women and girls which along with promoting positive societal change, is its mission.
