These student comments represent those that we receive on our student evaluations year after year.
The Math Science Conference is a half day conference that started in 1982. It has grown from 100 girls between 13 and 18 years old to between 600 and 900 girls from 20 schools.
This year the participants went from visiting Saturn with a JPL scientist to a incredible mixture of engineers, food scientists, entrepreneurs, nurses, doctors and many other occupations.
A keynote speaker begins the morning and then the participants attend three workshops with two different speakers. What an impact this conference has made. Teachers and students continually tell us how inspiring it is to them, in fact we now have four former students as speakers. But none of this would happen without the hard work of the three AAUW branches- Fullerton, Brea/La Habra and Placentia/Yorba Linda. We coordinate the facilities, obtain speakers, contact the schools, write the brochure and register the students. And on the day, we have at least 70 AAUW volunteers that provide hospitality, guide the students, and assist the speakers in their classrooms.
The reward is the great feeling we get when we see the smiles on the girl's faces, the excitement of the speakers, and teachers telling us how it inspires their students. And where do we get speakers from - everywhere. Some are friends, some are friends of friends etc. Some have been speaking for 10 years and love to participate.
